Sustainable Personal Care

Brush with Bamboo: A Revolution in Oral Hygiene

One of the most impactful switches you can make for the planet is replacing your plastic toothbrush with a sustainable alternative. Brush with Bamboo has been at the forefront of this movement, continuously innovating to offer truly eco-friendly oral care. While earlier versions featured plant-based handles and nylon bristles, their latest toothbrushes are a game-changer, with entirely plant-based components.

  • Soft Bristles: Crafted from a base of 62% castor bean oil, these bio-based bristles offer effective cleaning while being recyclable. Manufactured in the USA, they represent a significant step away from traditional plastic.
  • Sustainable Handle: The handle is made from 100% organic and wild bamboo, ensuring no pesticides or fertilizers are used in its cultivation. Bamboo is a rapidly renewable resource, making it an excellent choice for environmental sustainability.
  • Compostable Packaging: Even the wrapper protecting the toothbrush is plant-based and commercially compostable, ensuring that every part of the product returns to the earth responsibly.
  • Ethical Certifications: This brand boasts USDA Certified Biobased, Green American Certified, and Vegan certifications. Furthermore, their products are BPA-Free, natural, and non-toxic, guaranteeing peace of mind for both users and the planet.

Consider this alarming fact: Over 4.7 billion plastic toothbrushes are discarded into landfills and oceans globally each year, where they will never biodegrade. This contributes immensely to plastic pollution and harms marine life. By choosing Brush with Bamboo, you’re not just giving a gift; you’re contributing to a healthier planet. Make the switch from plastic and embrace a greener routine!

Curated Hair and Body Care Selections

Navigating the world of home and personal care products can be challenging for vegans, as many brands still test on animals or use animal-derived ingredients. Our journey to find truly ethical and effective solutions has involved extensive research and trial, ultimately leading to a selection of trusted brands that never compromise on compassion or quality.

For everyday hair and body care, we wholeheartedly recommend brands like Giovanni, Dessert Essence, Yarok, and Auromere. These companies are celebrated for their commitment to cruelty-free practices and their use of natural, nourishing ingredients. For masculine grooming essentials, my husband relies on the ethical offerings from Dr. Bronner’s Shaving Gel and the comprehensive Bull Dog Shaving and After Shave line. These brands provide luxurious and effective products without any animal-derived components or animal testing, making them ideal gifts for anyone seeking to elevate their personal care routine responsibly.

Inspiring Vegan Cookbooks and Literature

Inspiring Vegan Cookbooks

As a blogger constantly developing new recipes, it can be challenging to dedicate time to cooking from other cookbooks. However, certain books have deeply resonated with me this past year, reflecting my passion for bold spices, vibrant heat, and abundant flavor in food. Cookbooks are more than just recipes; they are portals to new culinary adventures, making them perfect gifts for anyone eager to explore the diverse world of vegan cuisine.

My Personal Favorites and Highly Recommended Books:

  • Vegan Richa’s Indian Kitchen: Unsurprisingly, this cookbook holds a special place. I cooked extensively from it earlier this year, and my husband often remarks on how much we should revisit its recipes, always praising their incredible flavor. (And I just give him a look that says, “yeah, ‘you’ should cook more!”). This book is more than a collection of recipes; it’s a testament to the richness of Indian vegan cuisine. Moreover, we are proud to donate 40% of this year’s book proceeds to support vital animal welfare projects and sanctuaries, which you can read more about below.
  • Teff Love: Adventures in Vegan Ethiopian Cooking by Kittee Berns: Ethiopian food, with its vibrant spices and deeply satisfying flavors, offers a culinary experience as rich and fulfilling as Indian cuisine. Kittee’s dedication to authenticity shines through, delivering amazing and genuine Ethiopian dishes. While traditional Ethiopian cooking requires a bit of planning, once you get into the rhythm, it becomes an incredibly rewarding journey.
  • Vegan Tacos: Authentic and Inspired Recipes for Mexico’s Favorite Street Food by Jason Wyrick: This book has become a household favorite, especially for my husband, who loves to browse it for party-perfect or weekend meal ideas. He often improvises with available ingredients, creating delightful taco variations. I anticipate even more traditional tacos once he delves into shopping at Mexican groceries! This book is an excellent gift for anyone who enjoys bold flavors and festive food.

Expanding Culinary Horizons: Books That Inspire New Adventures

  • Vegan Eats World: 300 International Recipes for Savoring the Planet by Terry Hope Romero: This extraordinary collection features recipes from across the globe, encouraging cooks to explore diverse culinary traditions and expand their palate. It’s an amazing resource for adventurous eaters.
  • Isa Does It: Amazingly Easy, Wildly Delicious Vegan Recipes for Every Day of the Week by Isa Chandra Moskowitz: Ideal for those transitioning to a vegan diet or seeking practical, delicious everyday meals, this book makes plant-based cooking accessible and enjoyable.
  • Robin Robertson’s Vegan Without Borders: Easy Everyday Meals from Around the World: For those eager to sample international cuisines without extensive effort, Robin Robertson offers a simplified yet flavorful approach, making global cooking approachable for everyone.

The vegan cookbook market is rich and diverse, offering something for every taste and skill level. Utilize Amazon’s previews and reviews to find the perfect culinary gift that will truly resonate with the recipient!

Thought-Provoking Reads and Children’s Books:

Beyond cookbooks, these titles offer engaging stories and valuable insights, making them excellent gifts that entertain and educate:

  • Persimmon Takes On Humanity (The Enlightenment Adventures: Book One): An intriguing read that delves into themes of enlightenment and humanity.
  • Ruby Roth’s Books for Children: Beautifully illustrated books that introduce children to veganism and compassion in an accessible and engaging way.
  • Living the Farm Sanctuary Life: The Ultimate Guide to Eating Mindfully, Living Longer, and Feeling Better Every Day by Gene Baur: A profound guide from the founder of Farm Sanctuary, offering insights into mindful living, animal welfare, and delicious plant-based recipes.

Support Animal Sanctuaries, Charities, and Projects

One of the most meaningful gifts you can give is a donation in someone’s name to an animal sanctuary or charity. This gesture of compassion supports vital work, providing care, protection, and advocacy for animals in need. Many of these organizations, often founded by dedicated vegans, tackle complex challenges to create a better world for both animals and humans. Join us in supporting these incredible initiatives and the heartwarming faces they protect.

The scale of animal welfare issues in countries like India often requires multifaceted solutions that address both animal suffering and human poverty. When communities struggle for basic survival, ignoring human needs while focusing solely on animals is not a sustainable path. These charities ingeniously craft solutions that benefit all living beings, offering a holistic approach to compassion. In contrast to many Western sanctuaries that care for hundreds of animals, sanctuaries in India frequently manage thousands, reflecting the immense scope of their work.

Supporting Animal Welfare in India

We are proud to support several impactful projects and sanctuaries with a portion of my book sales and blog income. Key organizations include VSPCA, Karuna Society (via Help Animals India), Wildlife SOS India, Animal Aid Unlimited Udaipur, and Old Dog Haven (Seattle).

Key Projects We Support Through These Charities:

  • Karuna Society’s Wildlife Rehab Center: Located within a dense forest, this center is dedicated to the rescue, medical care, and rehabilitation of wildlife. It actively works with local villagers to reduce hunting and poaching and mitigate human-animal conflict. You can learn more about its mission and current plans here.
  • Nepal Earthquake Relief: Grants from Help Animals India provided crucial support to Project Humane Nepal and Community Dog Welfare, including a special vegan food program for people in need.
  • Street Animal Sterilization and Vaccination: Thousands of street dogs and cats have been rescued, sterilized, and vaccinated across India in Visakhapatnam (VSPCA), Bangalore (CUPA), Sarnath (Sarnath Animal Welfare), Assam (Just Be Friendly), Puttapathi (Karuna Society), and Varanasi.
  • City-wide Street Animal Protection: VSPCA ensures street dogs and cats in Visakhapatnam receive daily feeding and protection.
  • New Cat Centers: Two new dedicated cat centers were established at HOPE & Animal Trust and People for Animals, Dehradun, providing safe havens for felines.
  • Rescue of Temple Elephant Aneesha: Aneesha, an elephant subjected to decades of abuse, neglect, and malnourishment as a timber logging elephant in rural Tamil Nadu, was rescued. She now lives peacefully at the WRRC sanctuary, a testament to the power of intervention.
  • Humane Education: Programs in schools and orphanages in Nepal teach children compassion and kindness towards street dogs, fostering a more humane future.
  • Cow Spay Programs: To prevent overpopulation and ensure every animal has a chance at a dignified life, cow spay programs are conducted, preventing new calves from being born into sanctuaries.
  • Sustainable Cow/Buffalo Sanctuaries: Sanctuaries are supported in becoming self-sustainable through biogas production, utilizing cow dung and urine distillation.
  • Plastic Cow Project: Hundreds of cows rescued from dire conditions are saved through surgical procedures to remove plastic trash from their stomachs, ingested from foraging on the streets. Without this intervention, many would face painful deaths.
  • Healthy Vegan Meals for Vulnerable Populations: VSPCA, with support from Phil Wollen’s Kindness Trust, provides nutritious vegan meals for homeless/abandoned people and their companion street dogs.
  • Disaster Relief for Animals: Crucial aid is provided to animals affected by disaster flooding in the neglected Northeastern state of Assam.

To receive regular updates and learn more about each of these impactful projects, sign up for email newsletters from Help Animals India here.

Wildlife SOS continues its critical mission to rescue captive elephants suffering from decades of abuse, torture, and malnourishment. Each rescued elephant carries a heartbreaking history, but with dedicated care, they begin new lives. Follow their incredible work and witness both the tears and the happy transformations on the Wildlife SOS Facebook page.

In the US, I frequently contribute to smaller, yet incredibly impactful organizations like Old Dog Haven, which provides loving final refuge homes for senior dogs. Other organizations we occasionally support include Mercy for Animals and Pigs Peace Sanctuary, both dedicated to protecting farmed animals and advocating for a compassionate world.
