Transform Your Weeknights with this Vibrant Orange Tofu
Say goodbye to bland weeknight dinners and hello to a burst of citrusy goodness! This Refreshing, zingy, and undeniably easy 30-minute meal is a perfect way to elevate any evening, including special occasions like Valentine’s Day. The beauty of this Orange Tofu recipe lies in its simplicity and the speed at which it comes together. You’ll be amazed at how quickly you can create restaurant-quality flavors right in your own kitchen.
The process is straightforward: firm tofu is expertly tossed in starch and baked to achieve a delightful crispiness, ensuring every bite offers a satisfying texture. Meanwhile, the magical orange sauce is prepared by combining a handful of pantry staples in a saucepan and allowing them to simmer into a thick, glossy, and aromatic glaze. The sauce is a star in itself, boasting a rich, complex flavor profile from fresh ginger, pungent garlic, and bright orange juice, all balanced with natural sweetness and absolutely no refined sugar. Once the tofu is baked and the sauce is ready, simply combine the two, and your incredible Orange Tofu is ready to be devoured!
What makes this dish truly special is its versatility. You can easily adjust the flavors of the sauce to suit your personal preference. Craving more tang? Add extra orange zest for a more intense citrus kick. Prefer a bit of heat? A touch more sriracha or chili flakes will do the trick. For those who enjoy a sweeter profile, a little extra maple syrup can be incorporated. Don’t hesitate to experiment with additional vegetables too! We highly recommend serving this dish with crisp, blanched broccoli or your favorite steamed veggies, garnished generously with fresh scallions and a sprinkle of pepper flakes for an added layer of flavor and visual appeal. This Orange Tofu is not just a meal; it’s an experience that’s quick, healthy, and incredibly flavorful.

Achieving Perfectly Crispy, Non-Chewy Tofu
The secret to exceptional orange tofu lies in the texture of the tofu itself. Nobody enjoys rubbery or chewy tofu, which is why our recipe focuses on achieving a beautifully crisp exterior while maintaining a tender interior. The journey to perfect tofu starts with pressing. Tofu naturally holds a lot of water, and removing this excess moisture is crucial for it to absorb flavors and achieve that desirable crunch when baked. We recommend pressing your firm tofu for at least 15 minutes before cubing it. This simple step makes a world of difference.
Once pressed and cubed, the tofu is tossed with a light coating of cornstarch and a touch of flour (rice flour is excellent for extra crispiness, but all-purpose works well too), along with salt, garlic powder, and pepper. This coating creates a barrier that helps the tofu crisp up in the oven. For optimal baking results and to ensure an evenly golden, non-chewy texture, we suggest using a stoneware or thick ceramic baking dish. These materials distribute heat more uniformly, leading to superior crisping. Bake at 400°F (205°C), giving the tofu a good shake halfway through to ensure all sides get a chance to brown and become delightfully crunchy.
Another crucial tip for maintaining that coveted crispiness is to keep the baked tofu and the orange sauce separate until you are ready to serve. Tossing the tofu with the sauce too early will cause it to soften and lose its delightful crunch. Instead, add the baked tofu to the warm sauce just a few seconds before serving, gently tossing to coat each piece. This brief exposure to the sauce allows the flavors to meld beautifully without compromising the tofu’s crispy texture. Serve immediately to enjoy the ultimate contrast of tender, flavorful tofu with a crisp outer layer, drenched in a glossy, aromatic orange glaze. This method guarantees a satisfying experience every time you make this easy Orange Tofu.
Crafting the Irresistible Orange Sauce
The heart of this Easy Orange Tofu recipe is undoubtedly its vibrant and flavorful sauce. It’s a harmonious blend of sweet, tangy, and savory notes, with a wonderful depth that truly transforms the dish. What makes our orange sauce stand out is its commitment to fresh, wholesome ingredients and the absence of refined sugars, relying instead on the natural sweetness of maple syrup and the inherent goodness of oranges.
The base of the sauce begins with aromatic powerhouses: finely chopped garlic cloves and freshly minced ginger. These two ingredients are fundamental to many Asian-inspired dishes, providing a warm, pungent, and slightly spicy foundation. Freshly squeezed orange juice, preferably from ripe oranges, brings a bright, sweet, and tangy element that is central to the sauce’s character. For a truly zingy flavor profile, consider adding the zest of half an orange, which intensifies the citrus notes beautifully. White or rice vinegar adds another layer of tanginess, cutting through the sweetness and balancing the overall profile. Soy sauce (or tamari for a gluten-free option, or coconut aminos for soy-free) provides the essential umami and savory depth.
Maple syrup offers a wholesome, unrefined sweetness that complements the citrus without overpowering it. A touch of water or vegetable broth helps to achieve the right consistency, and cornstarch acts as the thickening agent, creating that desirable glossy, clingy texture. Finally, a dash of sriracha or your favorite hot sauce introduces a subtle warmth and a gentle kick, which you can easily adjust to your spice preference, while a pinch of salt rounds out all the flavors. All these ingredients are combined and simmered in a saucepan, thickening into a rich, luscious sauce that perfectly coats the crispy baked tofu. The result is a bold, refreshing, and incredibly addictive orange sauce that will have you coming back for more.

Vegan Orange Tofu Recipe
Vegan Orange Tofu Recipe

Ingredients
- 14 oz firm tofu, pressed for 15 mins, then cubed
- 2 tbsp cornstarch, divided
- 1 tsp flour, (rice flour for crispier or all purpose)
- 1/4 tsp salt
- 1/4 tsp garlic powder
- a good dash of white or black pepper
Orange Sauce:
- 4 garlic cloves, finely chopped
- 1 inch ginger, minced or 1 tbsp grated
- 2 tbsp soy sauce , or use tamari to make gluten-free
- 2 tbsp white or rice vinegar
- 1 cup preferably fresh orange juice
- 3 tbsp maple syrup, or use sugar
- 1/4 cup water/broth
- 1.5 tbsp cornstarch, 2 tbsp for thicker sauce
- 1 tsp sriracha or other hot sauce
- 1/8 tsp salt
Instructions
-
Line a stoneware baking dish with parchment paper or lightly grease it. Preheat your oven to 400°F (205°C) to ensure it’s ready for baking.
-
Add the cubed and pressed tofu to a large bowl. Sprinkle 1 tablespoon of cornstarch, the flour, salt, garlic powder, and pepper over the tofu. Cover the top of the bowl securely with a plate or lid and shake vigorously to thoroughly coat all the tofu pieces. If the coating isn’t even, add a little more cornstarch and shake again until well-coated.
-
Spread the coated tofu in a single layer in the prepared stoneware dish. Bake in the preheated oven for 25 to 35 minutes, or until the tofu is golden brown and crispy to your liking. For even crisping, give the tofu a gentle shake or stir at the 20-minute mark to rotate the pieces.
-
If you’re serving with blanched broccoli (highly recommended!), now is a good time to prepare it. A simple tip: place broccoli florets in a deep baking dish with about an inch of water and put it in the oven alongside the tofu for 15-20 minutes. Remove it when you’re shaking the tofu for perfect tenderness.
-
While the tofu bakes, prepare the Orange Sauce. Combine all the sauce ingredients, except the water and the 1.5 tablespoons of cornstarch, in a saucepan. Cook over medium heat, bringing the mixture to a gentle boil while stirring occasionally. In a small separate bowl, thoroughly mix the remaining 1.5 tablespoons of cornstarch with the water until no lumps remain. Pour this cornstarch slurry into the simmering sauce. Continue to mix and cook for another 2 minutes, stirring constantly, until the sauce thickens to a glossy consistency. Taste the sauce and adjust the salt, sweetness (add more maple syrup if desired), or flavor (more zest or sriracha) as needed.
-
Once the tofu is baked and crispy, add it directly to the saucepan with the warm orange sauce. Gently toss to coat all the tofu pieces evenly. Remove from heat immediately to preserve the tofu’s crispiness. Serve this delicious Orange Tofu hot with your blanched broccoli, garnished with fresh scallions and a sprinkle of pepper flakes, over a bed of rice or your favorite grains for a wholesome and satisfying meal.

Notes
Add more sriracha or your preferred hot sauce if you enjoy a spicier kick.
Soy-free Option: If you need a soy-free version, you can use chickpea tofu instead of traditional firm tofu. Cube it and toss with 1.5 tablespoons of cornstarch, then pan-fry until most edges are crisp. Then, add it to the orange sauce as per the instructions. For the sauce, substitute soy sauce with coconut aminos and adjust salt to taste.
