Unleash the Fun: Why You’ll Love These Vegan Mummy Dogs
BOO! Halloween is a time for costumes, haunted houses, and, most importantly, festive food! These **Mummy Veggie Dogs** stand out as a wonderfully easy and engaging recipe that adds a touch of playful spookiness to your table. The concept is simple yet brilliant: a hearty filling of mashed potatoes and various vegetables, seasoned to perfection, forms the “dog,” which is then artfully wrapped in pizza dough to create the iconic mummy bandages. The result is a golden-baked snack that’s as appealing to the eyes as it is to the palate.
What makes these veggie dogs truly special is their incredible versatility and inclusive nature. You have complete control over the spices, allowing you to tailor the flavor profile to your preference – whether you like a mild, herby taste or a bold, zesty kick. Make a generous batch, because these savory treats have a habit of disappearing quickly! Serve them warm with classic marinara sauce, a tangy chutney, or even a simple ketchup for dipping. For those with gluten sensitivities, the veggie patties can be made gluten-free by using GF breadcrumbs, and they can be wrapped in a certified gluten-free pizza dough or even puff pastry for an equally delicious outcome.

Crafting Your Spooky Snacks: Ingredients & Preparation Insights
The magic of these **Vegan Mummy Dogs** begins with the flavorful veggie potato cutlets. The combination of potatoes, carrots, peas, and other chopped vegetables provides a satisfying texture and a rich base. Onions, garlic, and ginger lay the aromatic foundation, while a blend of Indian spices like garam masala, chaat masala (or amchur powder), coriander, and cumin powder elevates the taste to an exciting level. Cayenne pepper allows you to adjust the heat to your liking, ensuring these mummies have just the right amount of kick for your audience.
When preparing the veggie filling, aim for a consistency that is firm enough to shape but still moist and tender. Mashing the cooked vegetables thoroughly helps achieve this, and the addition of breadcrumbs binds everything together beautifully. Don’t be shy about tasting and adjusting the seasoning before shaping – this is your chance to perfect the flavor of your mummy’s heart! For those seeking an extra crispy exterior for their cutlets, a quick pan-fry or pre-bake before wrapping can make a delightful difference.
The pizza dough acts as the mummy’s bandages, offering a soft, chewy contrast to the savory filling. Whether you opt for homemade whole wheat dough for an extra nutritional boost, or a store-bought variety for convenience, ensure it’s pliable and easy to roll out thinly. Gluten-free doughs can sometimes be stickier, so having extra flour on hand for dusting your work surface is a smart tip. Alternatively, puff pastry can provide a wonderfully flaky and buttery (yet still vegan!) alternative for wrapping, adding another layer of indulgence to your Halloween treat.

Recipe Steps: Bring Your Mummies to Life!
Creating these **Vegan Mummy Dogs** is a joyful process. Follow these simple steps to transform humble vegetables and dough into a Halloween masterpiece.
Step 1: Prepare the Flavorful Veggie Patties
The heart of your mummy dog is its delicious veggie filling. Start by heating a teaspoon of oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the finely chopped onions and sauté them for about 5 minutes, or until they become beautifully translucent. This caramelization adds a subtle sweetness to the base. Next, introduce the minced garlic and ginger, stirring frequently for an additional 2 minutes until fragrant, being careful not to let the garlic burn. Its aromatic notes will infuse the entire mixture.
Now, add the chopped potatoes and a quarter cup of water to the skillet. Give everything a good stir to combine, then cover the pan and let it cook for 12 minutes. This steaming process helps the potatoes soften perfectly. After 12 minutes, stir again, then incorporate the remaining vegetables: carrots, any other chopped veggies like green beans or cauliflower (chopped small to ensure even cooking), and peas (fresh or thawed frozen). If the mixture seems dry or is starting to stick, add an extra tablespoon of water. Cover once more and continue to cook for 8 to 10 minutes, or until all the vegetables are very tender and easily mashable.
Once cooked, transfer the warm vegetables to a mixing bowl and allow them to cool slightly. Using a potato masher, thoroughly mash the mixture until it reaches your desired consistency – a few small chunks are fine for texture, but ensure it’s mostly smooth. Now for the flavor burst! Add the spices: garam masala, chaat masala (or amchur powder), coriander powder, cumin powder, and cayenne/red chili powder. Mix vigorously to evenly distribute the spices throughout the mashed vegetables. Taste and adjust the salt if necessary. Finally, stir in the breadcrumbs, starting with 1/2 cup and adding up to 1 cup as needed, until the mixture is firm enough to be easily shaped into uniform logs without being sticky or crumbly.

Step 2: Shape the Veggie Dogs
Take portions of the prepared veggie mixture and gently roll them between your palms or on a clean surface to form cylindrical shapes, approximately 3 to 4 inches long. Aim for a size similar to a standard hot dog or sausage. Place these shaped veggie dogs on a plate lined with parchment paper while you prepare the pizza dough.
Step 3: Prepare the Pizza Dough “Bandages”
Get your chosen pizza dough ready. If it’s store-bought, ensure it’s at room temperature for easier handling. Roll out the dough onto a lightly floured surface into a thin, rectangular shape. The thinner the dough, the more delicate your mummy bandages will appear. Using a pizza cutter or a sharp knife, slice the dough into thin strips, approximately 1/4 inch wide or even thinner. These will become the bandages that wrap around your veggie dogs. Preheat your oven to 400 degrees F (200°C) during this step.

Step 4: Wrap Your Mummies!
Now for the creative part! Take one shaped veggie dog and begin wrapping it with the pizza dough strips. Start at one end and irregularly crisscross the dough over the veggie dog, leaving a small gap near one end for the “face” where you might later add eyes. You can layer the strips slightly or leave small spaces to give it an authentic mummy look. Once wrapped, carefully place each mummy veggie dog onto a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. If desired, you can lightly spray or brush the wrapped mummies with a little oil for a richer golden crust. For extra spooky fun, use small peas or sliced black olives to create “eyes” on your mummies before baking!

Step 5: Bake to Golden Perfection
Transfer the baking sheet with your wrapped mummy veggie dogs to the preheated oven. Bake for approximately 11-12 minutes, or until the pizza dough turns a beautiful golden brown and is cooked through. The exact baking time may vary slightly depending on your oven and the thickness of your dough. Keep an eye on them to prevent overbaking.
Step 6: Serve and Enjoy!
Once baked, remove the **Vegan Mummy Dogs** from the oven. Let them cool for a couple of minutes before serving. These are best enjoyed warm, accompanied by your favorite dipping sauces. Classic choices include marinara sauce, ketchup, or a variety of chutneys. A spicy sriracha mayo or a cool ranch dip would also make fantastic accompaniments. These make perfect appetizers for a Halloween party or a fun, festive meal for the family.
